Since the resources are kind of all over, I think the easiest thing for me to do here is to list them under the major topics from the exam blueprint. This all means that I had to do it the old fashion way, which is a great way to learn. There’s no Cisco Press book, there’s not many video courses, and while there is an E-Learning course from Cisco it’s $1000 (I’ll pass on that one). I also am using a lot of IOS-XR at my new job and this exam made me a lot more comfortable with the platform.Īs for why I took this first instead of the SP Core exam? It’s simply that I looked at the blueprints and there was a lot more overlap to stuff I already knew. The side effects are that I’d get more exposure to multicast and MPLS. Since the CCIE lab centers in the US aren’t open (and there’s no timetable), I figured now was my time to take a stab at the CCNP SP.

After writing that post, I got interested in taking some service provider exams to see how I liked the track. You can read more about it in this post I wrote in November. There’s a bunch of reasons why I decided to take this exam, but the core of it was my well documented complaints about the CCIE EI lab blueprint. Going off the exam blueprint the main things tested are: You also earn a Cisco Specialist certification if you pass. SPRI is one of the concentration exams for the CCNP Service Provider track. A mouthful for sure, so we’ll just be going with SPRI for the remainder of the post.

This book also reviews the different MPLS applications (MPLS VPN, MPLS Traffic Engineering. This book focuses on the building blocks of MPLS (architecture, forwarding packets, LDP, MPLS and QoS, CEF, etc.). MPLS has grown to be the new default network layer for service providers and is finding its way into enterprise networks as well. For many service providers and enterprises MPLS is a way of delivering new applications on their IP networks, while consolidating data and voice networks.
